Action from Ankerside Rangers v Paradise Lounge

A late equaliser from James Coombes secured Paradise Lounge a draw in their first pre-season friendly against Tamworth side Ankerside Rangers.

Coombes, the Lichfield side’s top scorer last term with 18 goals, smashed home after a goalmouth scramble at Anker Valley.

Ankerside took the lead in spectacular style midway through the first-half after being gifted the ball by Paradise full-back James Warburton.

As Paradise’s defence froze, the midfielder capitalised and unleashed an unstoppable left-foot thunderbolt which soared into the top corner of stand-in goalkeeper Paul Hill’s net.

Paradise should have levelled before the break but Coombes and strike partner Ben Hartshorne were guilty of wasting a number of opportunities in front of goal.

The visitors dominated the second-half but missed chance after chance, until Coombes blasted past the Ankerside keeper from inside the six-yard box.

Player-boss Graham Welsh – who is managing the team this season with Dale Harley and Sam Owen – said:

“It was our first match since our last league game of the season in May so we were all a bit rusty. Not taking our chances was a big problem for us last season, so we’ll need to work on our finishing in training but the positive is we created loads in this game.

“All of us played at least 40 minutes which is a good workout for the squad and I’m sure we’ll be a lot sharper in our next friendly.”

Paradise: Paul Hill, James Warburton, Lee Rafter, Ben Lowe, Jay Tomkins, Adam Worthington, Graham Welsh, Sam Owen, Nick Hill, Ben Hartshorne, James Coombes. Subs: Pete Burton, Dale Harley, Simon Owen, Jack Lowe, Steve Spencer, Stuart Gauntlett, Mark Morris.
