The Scholars selection, consisting of a variety of first team, reserve and youth players, began well and Gary Birch’s right-footed shot was collected by keeper Nathan Woakes, but in the 10th minute trialist Andre Gonzales scored his maiden goal for the Chase when the Adders defence failed to clear a Cory Currithers cross.

Atherstone fought back and levelled through Jackson on 38 minutes, and Scholars keeper Oliver Crutchley was called into action three minutes later to tip a free kick around the post before Hammersley fired the resultant corner wide.

Dean Perrow made a welcome return from a groin injury as he replaced Currithers for the second half, but it was the hosts who enjoyed the better of the play.  Crutchley denied Tom Weare on 50 minutes and the Scholars held out, but on 73 minutes Simeon Smith looped a header over the keeper and the Adders were in front.

A close-run conclusion saw Perrow find the net with a left-footed shot seven minutes from time, but on 87 minutes the home side stole the win when Tim Guinness headed home at the far post.

The Scholars will be back to full strength for the visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers tonight (August 2) for a 7.30pm kick-off before travelling to Quorn next Saturday (3pm kick-off).
