Shenstone company to carry out repairs to Lichfield multi-storey car park

Work to reopen Lichfield’s multi-storey car park is finally set to begin after a Shenstone company was awarded the contract to carry out vital repairs.

Lichfield District Council has confirmed that Makers Construction has been chosen to carry out the work to the Birmingham Road structure.

The company specialises in car park refurbishment and concrete repair and will begin work this week – some seven months after the site was closed on safety grounds.

Simon Lamb, managing director of Makers Construction, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to have been successful in our tender for this job. We are very proud to be based in Lichfield District, and it will be rewarding to carry out a major refurbishment so close to home.

“We have lots of experience in this field and have just finished similar repairs to a multi storey car park in Stockton on Tees. We’re looking forward to bringing our expertise to such an important local project.”

The programme of works will include repairing the concrete floor and ceiling slabs, strengthening the columns, waterproofing the top-deck, and reinforcing a number of the facades.

Councillor Margaret Stanhope, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Democratic and Legal Services, added:

“Before the car park is reopened, it will be put through rigorous tests, including load testing. Once it is reopened, our structural engineers will asses the car park regularly.

“We’re very grateful to shoppers, traders and our partners for their patience during the unfortunate but necessary closure of the Birmingham Road car park. We are pleased work to repair it is set to start, and are doing everything we can to open it in time for the Christmas trading period.”

How much is it costing to repair?

When is it due to be demolished?
