Fire service teams up with Lichfield’s talking newspaper

A talking newspaper is helping to spread a fire safety message across Lichfield.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have teamed up with The Lichfield and District Talking Newspaper to try and encourage people to book a free home fire risk check.

The newspaperis a voluntary service which provides the local news, as well as national news and general articles of interest, on audible memory sticks for people who are visually impaired or registered blind.

Carmel Warren, community safety manager for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said:

“We are heavily involved with our local communities and we often meet blind or visually impaired people who could benefit from the service The Lichfield and District Talking Newspaper offers.

“Whilst carrying out Home Fire Risk Checks in the area, we will be taking referrals for The Lichfield and District Talking Newspaper or vice-versa, it will help us to identify anyone who may be vulnerable to fire risks.”

John May, chairman of The Lichfield and District Talking Newspaper added:

“The newspaper began production in November 1981 and now has 160 recipients, a figure which is currently increasing by three new listeners a week. Our service is completely free to anyone who is registered as visually impaired or blind and we record onto memory sticks every Thursday and post out to our listeners.

“We are focussed on Lichfield and South Staffordshire however we can provide our service wherever there is a need for it. Our mission is simple: to provide the best possible news and entertainment service to the blind and visually impaired and whilst doing that, we can also help to identify those of our listeners who could benefit from a free home fire risk Check from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
