Two firefighters from Lichfield will get the chance to showcase their skills on an international stage after being selected for the World Trauma Championships this September.

Chris Gaunt and Chris Ward from Lichfield Fire Station’s Red Watch came third in the National Championships last year and will now travel to Cork in Southern Ireland for the World Championships from September 2 to 6.

The Trauma Championships requires each team to treat two casualties for life-threatening injuries, exactly as they would at an incident if they were on scene before paramedics.

Mr Ward said:

“We were very pleased to have come third last year and didn’t expect to be invited to participate in the World Championships. It was a nice surprise and we hope to come within the top five teams.”

Mr Gaunt added:

“For a lot of incidents where injuries are likely to have occurred, in particular road traffic collisions, it is essential that firefighters can perform life-saving first aid to help to stabilise casualties before the paramedics take over.

“We are sometimes first to arrive to incidents and first aid techniques could be the difference between life and death.”
