Plan for shutters to keep skateboarders out of Lichfield shopping arcade

A Lichfield shopping arcade could be closed off to the public at night to stop skateboarders using it out of hours if plans get the go-ahead.

The owners of the City Arcade between Market Street and Bore Street have applied for planning permission to install two roller-shutters at either end of the passageway.

They say damage caused by skateboarders means that the shutters are now needed.

The application form submitted to planning chiefs states:

“There is currently no form of barriers at the entrances to City Arcade mall and access is available from both entrances at all times. This has resulted in the mall being accessed in the evenings for skateboarding activities.

“The skate-boarding has resulted in damage to the mall floor and other surfaces.”

Under the proposals, the shutters would be painted dark brown and closed outside of trading hours.

People can have their say on the proposed shutters at Lichfield District Council’s planning website.
