Police appeal after burglars target canal boats near Lichfield

Police are appealing for witnesses after burglars targeted canal boats near Lichfield.

Twelve narrow boats were raided on August 24 while they were moored on the Trent and Mersey Canal at Armitage behind the Ash Tree pub.

The offenders are believed to have struck between 3.30am and 4.30am, causing thousands of pounds of damage to the boats.

Property stolen included a large amount of fishing equipment, cameras, a television, brass ornaments and CB radios. There was no-one in the boats at the time.

PC Dave Griffiths, neighbourhood beat officer for the Armitage area, said:

“It is thought that the offenders accessed the narrow boats from the canal, using a boat themselves. They are then believed to have loaded the stolen property into a vehicle and driven off.

“We’re appealing for any witnesses to contact us immediately. We’d also take this opportunity to remind canal enthusiasts to ensure their boats are secured and not to leave valuable property on board.”

Anyone with information should ring PC 4457 Griffiths or PC  5377 Alison Lewis on 0300 123 4455 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
