£42,000 of benefit fraud uncovered by Lichfield District Council

A number of benefit fraudsters have been caught after a crackdown by Lichfield District Council.

The council has uncovered £42,454 worth of benefit fraud and has successfully prosecuted those who were incorrectly claiming the money.

On 30 June at Tamworth Magistrates’ Court, 41-year-old Kevin Pegg, of French Avenue in Mile Oak, pleaded guilty to one charge of dishonestly making false representations in his claim for housing and council tax benefit, and one charge of dishonestly failing to give prompt notification of a change in circumstances.

The court heard that Mr Pegg did not tell Lichfield District Council that he received tax credits. As a result, the council over paid him £1,713 in benefits, which he has to repay. The court gave Mr Pegg an 18 month conditional discharge, and ordered him to pay costs of £250.

On 20 July at Tamworth Magistrates’ Court, 29-year-old Emma Scarr, of Armada Close in Lichfield, pleaded guilty to two charges of dishonestly failing to give prompt notification of a change of circumstances while claiming housing benefit, council tax benefit and income support.

Miss Scarr failed to tell the council that she received a student loan, and as a result the council overpaid her £9,501, which she will have to pay back. The court gave Miss Scarr a 12 month supervision order, 100 hours unpaid work, and ordered her to pay costs of £100.

On 28 July at Tamworth Magistrates’ Court, 43-year-old Dawn Edge, of Hilton Road in Chase Terrace, pleaded guilty to one charge of dishonestly failing to give prompt notification of a change of circumstances.

The court heard that Miss Edge did not notify Lichfield District Council that she had received tax credits and had also worked for four different employers between September 2007 and February 2010. As a result, the council overpaid Miss Edge £7,318, which she will have to repay.

Miss Edge was sentenced to 80 hours unpaid work, a 12 month supervision order, and was ordered to pay costs of £425.

On the same day at Tamworth Magistrates’ Court, 44-year-old Nicola Farnall, of Aspen Close in Lichfield, pleaded guilty to six charges of dishonestly making a false representation in her claim for housing and council tax benefit.

The court heard that Mrs Farnalls’ claim for housing and council tax benefit was false from the start as she had failed to declare that she held capital of more than £40,000. As a result, the council overpaid her £15,405, which she will have to repay.

Mrs Farnalls was sentenced twelve weeks imprisonment, suspended for two years, 180 hours unpaid work, and a 12 month supervision order. She was also ordered to pay costs of £425.

Then on 10 August also at Tamworth Magistrates’ Court, 42-year-old Tracy Dunwoody, of Worthington Road, Fradley, was prosecuted for dishonestly making false representations in her claim for housing and council tax benefit.

The court heard that Mrs Dunwoody falsely claimed she had separated from her partner. As a result the council overpaid her £8,517 which she will have to repay.

Mrs Dunwoody was sentenced 180 hours community service and ordered to pay costs of £100.

Councillor Michael Wilcox, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Revenues and Benefits, said:
