Review: Show Me Chris & Pui @ Lichfield Garrick

Chris Jarvis and Pui Fan Lee

With a mixture of songs, characters and good pantomime-style fun, CBeebies stars Chris Jarvis and Pui Fan Lee were able to send their junior Lichfield Garrick audience home with a smile.

But a greater trick was probably sending their parents home with one too!

Backed by the success of their TV programme Show Me Show Me, the pair instantly had the junior theatre-goers hanging on their every word and by throwing in some gags designed to get the parents grinning too, ensured they had everyone onside.

When The Lichfield Blog spoke to Chris before the show’s visit to Lichfield he admitted that working with youngsters was a challenge he relished – and this soon became clear as both he and his presenting partner threw themselves into a simple, yet engaging show.

By keeping the segments short and sharp they were able to ensure fidgety pre-schoolers were never given the chance to drift away and the energy of their performance enchanted their junior fans from start to finish.

Their stage production may not have been Show Me Show Me, but it stuck to their successful formula as characters such as Incey Wincey Spider and the Grand Old Duke of York saw hundreds of little feet dancing along to songs and laughing along with their perfectly-pitched jokes.

If there was any doubt about the pair’s popularity, you only had to see the amazement on young faces as their idols escaped from the TV set to be there on stage in front of them.

It’s easy to underestimate the ability of performers who work for a primarily pre-school audience. But seeing them work their magic at the Garrick gives you a new respect for their efforts – after all, it’s hard enough keeping one tot entertained for more than an hour, let alone a theatre full of them.

Chris and Pui, the parents of Lichfield salute you!

Chris and Pui will be at the Lichfield Garrick until tomorrow (August 30th). Tickets start from £6.50 and can be booked from www.lichfieldgarrick.com or by calling the box office on 01543 412121.
