Shenstone Pathfinder FC may have lost to the league leaders but will be boosted by the fact they could easily have won the game.

The visitors started the game brightly with some good passing and movement. Matt Heaton looked dangerous on the right and had a shot well saved by the keeper after he beat the full back and fired low from the edge of the box.

Pathfinder dominated the first 30 minutes and took the lead after some quick thinking from a corner. Steve Mercer took a short corner to Dale Anderson who sqaured for Matt Jones to fire home from 12 yards out.

With Shenstone in front Warstones came to life and in an amazing ten minute spell before half time they scored three goals to take a 3-1 lead into the break. The first was a fine individual effort and the other two flew in from 25 yards to leave keeper Dan Clenton helpless and Pathfinder shell shocked.

The second half saw the visitors continue to play well, although it was a more even half than the first.

Matt Heaton had another shot well saved after nutmegging the full back and Andy Baldwin had a shot that whistled wide.

Pathfinder did cut the deficit with an excellent late finish by Baldwin after a fine through ball by Mike Mayo, but it was too late for Pathfinder to get an equaliser and the game ended 3-2 to Warstones.

Manager Chris Whitehouse said:

“We performed well and we have shown we can compete with the teams at the top of this division, it would have been wasy for the lads to fold in the second half after the spell before half time but we showed good character and nearly got back into the game.

“It’s not very often two goals fly in from 25 yards against you so we consider ourselves a bit unlucky, but we take a lot of heart from this performance and we have had a good start to the season.”
