Lichfield City FC 2 Bromsgrove Sporting 1

A record crowd of 250 saw Lichfield City FC complete a Bank Holiday double with a win against Bromsgrove Sporting.

Goalkeeper Dan Edwards was again on top form as he denied the visitors early on when he somehow clawed out a Richard Griffiths shot to keep the scores level.

But the keeper’s good work was undone in the 25th minute when he brought down Zac Blood for a penalty. Visiting skipper Griffiths stepped up to score from the spot.

Gilbert’s half-time words clearly had the desired effect as Lichfield picked up their game after the restart and were rewarded when recent signing Dan Hodgkins hit a superb strike from a difficult angle into the top of the net to level the game.

City continued to press and missed two or three good chances to go in front before they finally found the net through the ever-reliable Jon Rob Dutton in the 70th minute.

A delighted Gilbert paid tribute to his matchwinner – and the unsung heroes at Lichfield City. He said:

“Jon is lethal – simple as that. You don’t win the golden boot for nothing and this lad has it all. Against Bromsgrove he got us an important victory against a side fancied to win the league.

“What people don’t see is the work that goes on behind the scenes. I have a fantastic team of coaches behind me in Andy McRobbie, Ray Kelly and Frank McLeod. We are playing well and its down to these people as much as the players. They have the lads playing and training with confidence and the players are enjoying being part of Lichfield City FC.”

Lichfield will look to add more points when they travel to Droitwich Spa Reserves on September 4 (kick-off 3pm).
