Lichfield City FC returned with all three points from their long trip to Droitwich Spa – but the players still had the harsh words of their manager ringing in their ears.

Manager Dean Gilbert admitted that, despite the win, the performance was not good enough.

The City boss explained:

“It was a disappointing display, especially after the performance we put in against Bromsgrove. People will question my comments but we have to keep our standards up if we are to do anything this season and another performance like that on Saturday will see us record our first defeat of the season.”

Lichfield weathered an early storm before goals from John Rob Dutton, Dan Hodgkins and Tom Evans got them back on track.

But Gilbert admits his side had a lucky escape:

“In the first 20 minutes we were our own worst enemies and, but for woeful finishing from Droitwich, we could have found ourselves four down. We managed to pull ourselves together and produce a good 25 minutes and  bag three good goals.

“Players need to start to take responsibility in front of goal. Too many times we’ve worked hard to get into the box only for players to shirk the chance and pass the ball when the shot was the easier option. It’s a bad habit and a habit we have to break.

“I wouldn’t be exaggerating when I say that so far it’s cost us a good ten goals over four games and that could cost us at the end of the season if it comes down to goal difference.”

Lichfield City’s players will hope to find the cutting edge their boss is demanding when they entertain Young Warriors on September 11 at 3pm.
