Skipper keen for Lichfield RUFC to learn from mistakes after defeat

Lichfield RUFC skipper Dave Bassett has urged his players not to be too downbeat after their defeat against Sutton Coldfield RUFC.

The Myrtle Greens came out on the wrong end of a 36-20 scoreline, despite showing plenty of creative play.

And Bassett believes Lichfield must learn the lessons from the game. He said:

“We created a number of chances and can be upbeat about the performance as we are aware that we can improve considerably on this result. The team will continue to learn and the new inclusions to the squad will add depth. Sutton were more clinical with their finishing and a few tweaks to the defensive organisation will make us harder to break down.

“There was good home support and there was a positive feel around Cooke Fields despite the result. We must learn quickly, however, as there are no easy games at this level. But we can take a lot of positives out of pushing one of the top four sides in the league all the way.”

Lichfield will look to bounce back when they travel to Walsall on Saturday (September 18).

And Bassett believes the task won’t be any easier for the Myrtle Greens. He added:

“They are always a strong side at home, but we can approach the game in a positive frame of mind and ready to rise to the considerable challenge that Walsall will undoubtedly set us.”
