Man arrested after racist incident in Chase Terrace

Police are appealing for witnesses after  a man was arrested in connection with a racist incident in Chase Terrace.

A 43-year-old man was walking past the Tesco Metro store on Cannock Road, Sankey’s Corner, at 2pm yesterday (September 16) when the driver of a silver car beeped his horn at the man, who is black, and shouted racial abuse at him.

The victim reported the abuse and officers have now arrested a 26-year-old man from Burntwood. He was questioned before being released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Sgt Diane Steventon, from Burntwood Police, said:

“Racist incidents of this nature are very unusual in Burntwood, but on the rare occasions they do occur we endeavour to deal with them swiftly and firmly.

“The incident happened in the middle of the afternoon in a shopping centre so we’re appealing for any witnesses to ring us on 0300 123 4455 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

The Staffordshire Police incident number is 427 of 16 September.
