Burntwood RUFC 32 Veseyans RUFC 7

A bonus point win for Burntwood RUFC took them to third place in the table level on points with Handsworth and one behind early pace-setters Newcastle (Staffs).

The win was based on a dominant display by the forwards who established control early on, particularly in the scrummages. There were two pushover tries by skipper and No. 8 Graham Shelley, the first coming as early as the 11th minute to open the scoring.

The visitors recovered from a whirlwind start by the home pack to take the lead after 18 minutes. The hosts were caught offside 25 yards out and a quick tap penalty saw a Veseyans centre race in for a converted try.

However, these proved to be the only points conceded by Shelley’s men who regained the lead just 2 minutes later. Following an initial break from inside his own half by scrum half Ollie Whitehouse, the ball was moved down the line for Luke Briggs to open his senior account with a try in the corner.

Veseyans had penalty chances to reply but missed with kicks on 26 and 32 minutes. These proved costly when Shelley finished off his second pushover try close to half time and Matt Wood converted to take his side into the break 17-7 up.

The visitors made a concerted effort to get back into the contest after the turnaround. They kicked a penalty to the corner and won 2 line outs but the home defence resisted well and eventually, helped by a scrum taken against the put-in and then a penalty award, they cleared their lines and went further ahead with a fine try after 55 minutes.

Receiving line out possession, outside half Ben Holt sensed a gap 25 yards out and dummied his way clean through to the line for the bonus point. Wood converted.

Burntwood sealed their win with a penalty from Wood on 75 minutes and then a 5th try in added time. Whitehouse took possession from a Veseyans drop out. He chipped ahead and collected to score wide out to bring proceedings to a satisfactory end for the hosts.

With Burntwood given a bye in the 1st Round of the Midlands Senior Vase competition they are looking for a club fixture this Saturday (September 25).
