Lichfield Garrick Youth Theatre prepare for production of Footloose

Lichfield Youth Theatre’s 25th anniversary production is the toe-tapping, high-energy musical, Footloose.

The show is a 1998 musical based on the award-winning film of the same name, which opened on Broadway the same year. The London production opened in 2006.

As with previous productions, the Youth Theatre has again come up with a musical with a great story behind the songs.

The show opens with Ren, an ordinary city kid, in a dance club in Chicago, dancing off his stresses born of his long and arduous eight-hour work day.

Following his father’s abandonment, he and his mother Ethel move to a small town named Bomont, where his aunt and uncle give them shelter.

Once there, Ren and Ethel attend church and get their first glimpse of Reverend Shaw Moore, a conservative minister who is a big authority figure in the town. He preaches a sermon lambasting the evils of rock and roll music and dancing.

Ren meets up with the slow-witted Willard at school and tells him of his love of dance. He’s warned not to dance at school, but goes ahead in front of the principal, who tells him dancing is banned in Bomont.

After much effort, the boy manages to win over the Minister and the townspeople and brings everyone together for a spectacular dance which forms the finale of the show.

The Oscar-nominated score includes Holding out for a Hero, Let’s Hear it for the Boy and the title song.

Musical Director Oliver Rowe said of the production:

“Footloose is a really special production, as it is the official 25th Anniversary of the Youth Theatre. Twenty-five  years ago our very first musical was Grease and here we are today having gone from strength to strength with the fantastic facilities and support of the Lichfield Garrick.

“We have a cast of 45 members made up of young people from around the Lichfield area aged from 12 – 18. They will be supported by a full group of professionals backstage and in the show band – many of whom dedicate their time for Youth Theatre completely voluntarily.”

The show is directed by Aimee Berwick with choreography by Jessica Lambert.

Footloose runs at the Lichfield Garrick from tomorrow (September 28) to October 2.
