Protesters waiting to greet transport minister Philip Hammond all had different reasons for opposing a high-speed rail line through Lichfield – but they were all united in their belief that it cannot be allowed to go ahead.

A small band of placard-bearing campaigners from the Lichfield Action Group and Stop Hs2 took up station outside the Guildhall as they waited for the chance to share their views with the Secretary of State for Transport.

His visit gave the minister the chance to see some of the areas affected by the proposed route as well as allow local politicians and campaigners to explore alternative route options.

Although they were initially disappointed not to make their point after Mr Hammond was forced to use the building’s rear entrance because of the city centre pedestrian zone, the minister did come out to meet protesters after his one hour meeting.
