Lichfield schoolchildren to put local democracy in the spotlight

Budding politicians will be exploring the world of local democracy during a series of events in Lichfield.

Hundreds of schoolchildren will learn how decisions about their community are made during the workshops being hosted by Staffordshire County Council to celebrate National Local Democracy Day on October 15.

The pupils will discuss and debate one of two topics – spending public money or safer routes to school.

Leader of Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins said:

“Giving young people and budding future politicians the opportunity to learn how decisions are made will help them to understand how those decisions impact on our community. “This will help equip the children involved with a greater understanding of the democratic process and encourage them to take part in their future while having fun.

“The sessions have proved to be very popular with pupils in the past and I am sure that the children will get a lot out of it again this year.”
