Lichfield HS2 campaigners prepared to look at alternative routes

The man leading a campaign in Lichfield has admitted that alternative routes will need to be looked at.

Lichfield Action Group had initially said that energy would be best spent battling for the line to be scrapped.

However, chairman Iain Sands – who met with transport minister Philip Hammond and Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant in the city yesterday (October 5) – has said that they may now need to take a damage limitation approach.

He explained:

“Michael Fabricant did us a good job by putting our case very strongly that we don’t want that viaduct over the A38 and we don’t want it cutting off Streethay and we don’t want it to go through Curborough. Unfortunately that means pushing it into someone else’s back yard.

“That’s something I didn’t want to get involved in, but I think they’re so closed mind now that this is going to happen, that this is probably the best we’re going to get.”
