Lichfield City FC 4 Enville Athletic FC 2

Dan Hodgkins repaid manager Dean Gilbert’s faith by playing a starring role in Lichfield City’s 4-2 victory over Enville Athletic.

The City striker was selected in favour of top-scorer Jon Rob Dutton for a lone-striker role and duly obliged by notching all four goals.

Hodgkins opened the scoring on the quarter of an hour mark after some excellent approach play from Simon Deeley before doubling his and City’s tally five minutes later.

Enville didn’t let their heads drop though and reduced the deficit to 2-1 before Hodgkins completed his hat-trick in the 40th minute to give Gilbert’s men a 3-1 half-time lead.

Some poor City defending gave the visitors a lifeline soon after the restart but Hodgkins put the game beyond them on the hour mark as he finished with aplomb following a defence-splitting pass from Danny Worrall.

Gilbert said:

“I was delighted for Dan. We had spoken to him before the game and told him to just go out there and enjoy it. He’s a typical striker. If he’s not scoring he’s not happy but he doesn’t see what we see from the sidelines. His work rate is superb. I brought Dan in not just for his goals but for the work rate he produces each game.

“He’s not your typical one dimensional striker. Being upfront on his own gave him the freedom to do what he does best and that is to link up with the players around him.”

Elsewhere, Lichfield City’s reserves recorded a 3-0 away-day victory over Alveston Reserves in the imoSports Midland Combination Division Three.
