Injuries and suspensions give Lichfield City FC boss a selection headache

Lichfield City FC go into their away clash with Continental Star Reserves with 11 players ruled out by injury or suspension.

Lewis Bourne, Danny Worrall and Tom Ivors should all miss out after being sent off during last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Henley Forest with eight other City players nursing injuries.

And manager Dean Gilbert admits the situation is an unusual one. He explained:

“I can honestly say that in all my years in football I have never been in a situation like this. To have 11 players unavailable for a game is ridiculous and something I just can’t get my head around.

“Injuries are hitting the team hard. Key players are falling fast.”

Gilbert is concerned that the current injury situation could blight City’s promotion push. The Brownsfield Park outfit are five points behind leaders Feckenham, who have two games in hand, whilst third-placed Blackwood are just three points behind and have played four games less than City.

He added:

“I set a target two years ago and we simply have to go up this season. I need to sit down and start again and put in to perspective what is achievable this season.

“One thing I can say though is that, with the current crop of injuries, we may not have a fully-fit squad to pick from until the Christmas period, which is frustrating.”
