The Bishop of Lichfield has said that a visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury has inspired thousands of local Christians.

The Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill spoke after the conclusion of Dr Rowan Williams’ extended visit to the Diocese of Lichfield.

During his time in the region, he visited St Giles Hospice and a local centre for young offenders and addressed a debate on the future of rural churches. He also led a service at Lichfield Cathedral.

Bishop Gledhill said:

“The Archbishop of Canterbury’s visit was the first time for many years that people from across the Diocese had the chance to come together en masse and every event was packed.

“Throughout the Archbishop’s visit we have had wisdom, solid teaching, encouragement, humour and not a little inspiration.  Thousands of people, both regular church goers and enquirers, have discovered the real Rowan Williams, which is rather different from the public image.”
