Lichfield and Burntwood firework traders applauded after spot checks are carried out

Shops selling fireworks in Burntwood and Lichfield have been applauded after a trading standards operation saw them carry out age checks correctly.

Around 60 outlets across Staffordshire were checked as part of a Staffordshire County Council scheme and all refused to sell fireworks to under-age shoppers.

In addition to the test purchasing, the trading standards team visited 142 shops to check fireworks were being stored properly and found that strict storage and sales requirements were being carried out.

Cabinet member for communities and culture Ben Adams said:

“It’s great to see that reported incidents of the misuse of fireworks in our communities are declining. This is due to the good work of the team in raising awareness in schools of the dangers that fireworks pose and reinforcing the age restrictions on their supply.”
