Paradise player-manager Dale Harley applies some pressure against Amington

Runaway league leaders Amington Rovers extended their lead at the top of the table as two goals in either half inflicted Paradise Lounge’s first defeat of 2011.

In action for the first time since November’s 6-0 beating by Whitehouse because of December’s snowmaggedon, Paradise made a positive start to proceedings and were unfortunate to go behind when forward Greg Burton latched onto a long ball from the back and got the better of seasoned left-back Mark Morris to score for Amington.

Burton, who scored five goals last Sunday, got his and Amington’s second midway through the first-half after the referee awarded a controversial free-kick which rightly incensed the Lichfield hosts.

Lounge continued to frustrate Rovers who were struggling to pierce the Paradise defence, until star striker Simeon Smith was in the right place at the right time to make it 3-0 with a deft near-post finish.

Amington beat the offside trap to add a fourth soon after but were denied on numerous occasions by goalkeeper Paul Webb, who was enjoying his best display of the season so far between the sticks.

And Webb, inspired by the magic of the FA Cup third round, almost headed Paradise a deserved consolation when he joined his team-mates at the other end of the pitch for the last corner of the game.

Despite a fourth successive setback, player-manager Dale Harley was encouraged by his side’s much-improved performance:

“Amington have been destroying teams every week, so a 4-0 loss having played well is nothing to be ashamed about really. We showed great team spirit and never gave up the fight.

“Everyone put in a shift today but Paul Webb and Ben Lowe were my men of the match – Webby made some incredible stops and Ben’s last-ditch tackles were superb.”

Paradise: Paul Webb, Mark Morris, Paul Hill, Ben Lowe, James Wilkinson, Adam Worthington, Graham Welsh, Sam Owen, Dale Harley, Pete Burton, Steve Spencer (Simon Owen).
