An event to take place at Lichfield Cathedral aims to raise funds for their East End appeal will see the performance of 150 psalms.

The Cathedral’s East End appeal is a drive to raise money to save the Herkenrode Glass in the Lady Chapel and the ‘Psalmathon’ is the latest appeal fundraising event.

Over 2 days, 5 different groups will sing all 150 psalms using as many musical guises as they can find from plainchant, through Anglican chant, to responsorial psalmody and hymn paraphrases to favourite composed settings such as Allegri’s ‘Miserere’, Mozart’s Laudate Dominum and works by Elgar, Schubert and Vaughan Williams.

Supporters are encourage to sponsor a psalm with all 150 sung by all the choirs associated with the Cathedral. The event will take place on Friday 4th February 6.15pm until 10.45pm and on Saturday 5th February from 7am right through until 9pm. There will also be a free introduction to the Psalms of David and Q&A session, given by the author the Rev’d Canon Dr Pete Wilcox, Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral at 12.30 on Saturday 5th February.

Patricia Collins, Director of Fundraising said of the event:

We are delighted that the Cathedral music community has chosen this innovative and uplifting approach to raising funds for essential work on the East End of the Cathedral, which provides the home for the beautiful Herkenrode Glass. The whole project includes the work of stone masons, scaffolding, glaziers, specialist consultants, metal workers and conservators – all very skilled occupations. We need to raise the balance of £880,000 this year to cover our commitment to restoring the Cathedral to its former glory for the benefit of the whole community and generations to come.

Psalms can be sponsored by completing one of the sponsorship forms located on the West End welcome desk at the back of the Cathedral, by donating on line or sending a cheque to 2011 Psalmathon, Fundraising Officer, 19A The Close, Lichfield, STAFFS, WS13 7LD (payable to ‘Lichfield Cathedral’).
