Plans to build a new crematorium and memorial garden near Lichfield have been unveiled. Mercia Crematoria Developments have submitted plans to Lichfield District Council to develop the new site at land behind the Fradley Arms pub. Should the scheme get the green light from planning chiefs, the development would see the crematorium, chapel and associated buildings constructed off Fradley Lane. In a statement supporting their application, Mercia Crematorium Developments say the new building is needed as other similar sites in the region are operating “well above capacity”. The company added:
“Three of the four crematoria nearest Lichfield do not have sufficient true capacity to accommodate projected population rise, let alone an increased cremation rate. “The unreasonable length of journey required of a substantial population of the district’s bereaved residents is a clear indication of a qualitative need for a more local facility.”
Residents can have their say on the proposals and view more detailed plans on Lichfield District Council’s website.
