Burntwood RUFC Veterans welcomed Nottingham Moderns Veterans to The Sportsway and managed to inflict a rare defeat on the visitors, Mark Bourne’s side winning 22-5.

Much of the action became bogged down in muddy midfield but the hosts broke away on three occasions to reach the try line.

The first came after 20 minutes when Rob England went through a gap on halfway and out-stripped the Moderns’ defence for a try under the posts which Craig Addy
converted.

Then hooker Gordon MacDonald shrugged off a tackle 25 metres out and backed his pace to reach the line for a try under the posts. Addy converted and also added a
penalty before the break for a 17 point lead.

Moderns went close to reducing the deficit 25 minutes into the second period but a kick through beat the follow up player over the dead ball line before he could reach it.

However, confusion at a line out five metres off their own line allowed Moderns to get off the mark with a try.

In the final minute, good handling by the backs presented full back Jason Megan with a run to the line from 40 metres to round off the scoring.
