The anniversary of Samuel Johnson’s decision to leave Lichfield for the bright lights of London will be marked by a lecture.
March 2 will be exactly 274 years after his move and the Johnson Society will be inviting Freya Johnston from Oxford University to deliver a talk – Johnson’s Departures.
Starting at 7pm, the entry to the event at the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum is free and gives visitors a chance to find out more about one of Lichfield’s most famous sons.
During the day Johnson’s departure will also be marked with a traditional toast at the Birthplace Museum. This annual toast has taken place since 1982, following the arrival of a chair that was owned by Johnson, donated by an American patron who accompanied his gift with a case of sherry and stipulated that the departure be toasted.
