Commuters in Lichfield are being given books for them to read on the train.

The initiative is part of World Book Day and will see passengers at Lichfield City station being handed a paperback novel.

People will be able to pick up a book between 8am and 10am, and 4pm and 6pm tomorrow (March 3).

The event marks World Book Day and has been organised by Staffordshire County Council, London Midland and the West Midlands Readers Network.

County Councillor Patrick Corfield said the event was a great opportunity for people to get involved in literature and reading. He added:

“The daily commute is an ideal time to take some time for yourself and enjoy a book. The books being given away are just a sample of what is on offer at Staffordshire’s libraries. We hope that this event will bring people back to reading and encourage them to enjoy the books, IT facilities and friendly welcome on offer at their local library.

“While libraries are closing nationwide, Staffordshire County Council is innovating and improving the library service to meet the needs of the whole community.”

Dave Harris, customer service manager at London Midland, said:

“Many of our passengers relax on the train and enjoy a good book, so we’re delighted to help promote reading and celebrate World Book Day.”
