A team of firefighters from Lichfield have shown off their skills by winning a county competition for the fourth year running.

The city team saw off competitors from across Staffordshire to win the Extrication Challenge, which sees them judged on their professionalism in releasing trapped casualities from vehicles.

Lichfield saw off the challenge of runners-up Burton-on-Trent to win the chance to represent the region at the National Finals in London in September.

Watch manager Steve Whitehouse said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for Lichfield. We have now got to maintain our focus and prepare ourselves for the National Finals.

“Although there is an aspect of fun in taking part in the competition, the real reason for the event is to rehearse and demonstrate the live saving skills that we put into practice on a daily basis when we attend road traffic collisions.

“The accuracy and speed of these skills is essential in order for us to continue to assist in reducing the number of deaths on our roads and to provide the best service possible for our community.”

Lead Trainer, Damian Armstrong, who organised the event, added:

“Some of the areas that the teams were tested on include medical care, rescue technique and incident command. It was a great day for all concerned and the feedback from the external adjudicators was yet again very positive which shows the amount of effort put in by all the teams.”

The team were presented with a certificate and a glass trophy by Chief Fire Officer Peter Dartford.
