Lichfield men whose lives have been affected by cancer are being invited to a new support group.
Rob Hamilton, 27, will launch the first meeting of the group on April 6 in conjunction with the Sharon Fox Cancer Centre.
Rob, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2008, said he hopes the meetings, which will include information about cancer treatments, symptoms and
diagnosis, will encourage men to feel more positive about their situation.
He said:
“Men are under-represented in cancer support groups, probably because most men like to bottle things up rather than talk about it. The support group will offer men
whose lives have been affected by cancer in any way, the chance to voice their concerns, ask questions, share experiences and feel relaxed.“I hope that if I share my story with people they will take strength from this and share theirs. I understand the importance of being able to speak about your concerns and fears when you have cancer or know someone who has.”
Rob was given the all clear in March 2009 after two operations and nine weeks of chemotherapy. Since recovering his full health he has dedicated his energy and
time to raising awareness and promoting male cancer in the media.
Last September, Rob and two friends got on their bikes and rode from London to Paris to raise money for the Orchid Male Cancer Charity.
He met Sharon Fox at a charity event last summer and when she mentioned that she wanted to develop the charity further and offer support specific to men suffering because of cancer, he was inspired to offer his time.
