A guided walk near Lichfield is set to celebrate the sounds of the dawn chorus.

Fradley Junction will be among a host of sites across the globe celebrating International Dawn Chorus Day on May 1.

British Waterways is inviting people to go along and hear the birds in full voice during a free 4am walk around the nature reserve, led by Stuart Collins.

Stuart said:

“The Midlands’ canals, rivers and reservoirs are home to a fantastic array of wildlife and it’s fascinating to see how they come to life long before we venture from our beds. The dawn chorus is one of the most magnificent experiences in nature yet too few of us actually get to hear it. It’s well worth doing something different, sacrificing the usual lie-in and learning more about the many different species of birds that can be appreciated at their best in the early hours.”

The walk will meet in the Fradley Junction car park on May 1 at 3.45am for a 4am start. The event can be followed by breakfast, costing £5, at the on-site café at 6am. To book, call Stuart Collins on 01827 252000 or e-mail
