The Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra (DECO) will perform their Spring concert on May 14 at 7.30pm.

Conductor Philip Scriven will open the evening with Mozart’s Divertimento in D, before DECO’s Artistic Director Alex Laing and 18-year old rising star Georgia Hannant take centre stage in Bach’s ever-popular Double Violin Concerto.

The mood changes completely, moving forward in time, with Warlock’s Capriol Suite – an atmospheric 20th-century English take on a set of Renaissance dances.  The audience will then be whisked back to the baroque as DECO’s strings are joined by Lichfield flautist Clare Graves in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5.

After venturing into romantic repertoire earlier this year, this concert sees DECO’s string players showcasing their talents.

Artistic director Alex Laing said:

“After the bold and romantic grandeur of our February concert it is exciting to perform this time as a much more intimate ensemble.  The music is some of the greatest composed for string orchestra.  Mozart and Bach are, of course well known and hugely popular. The Capriol Suite by Warlock is a modern gem by a composer who led a truly colourful and controversial life.”

Springtime Strings starts at 7.30pm on May 14 in Lichfield Cathedral. Tickets are available from DECO, 20c The Close, Lichfield WS13 7LD, by calling 01543 258303 or emailing [email protected]. They are also available from Lichfield Cathedral Shop on 01543 306150.
