The price of meals at schools in Lichfield and Burntwood are set to be frozen.

Staffordshire County Council confirmed that primary and middle school pupils will continue to pay £2.10, while high school students will carry on paying £2.20.

The freeze is due to run until April 2012 – although councillors confirmed the prices will be reviewed at the end of every term.

Cllr Liz Staples, Cabinet Member for Education & Skills, said:

“This is a move designed to support families. Through careful planning and identifying where savings can be made, while not impacting on the quality of service, we are delighted to announce that prices for school meals will not be increasing for the summer term, and we hope to continue this freeze for the entire 12 months if at all possible.

“The cost of providing food depends on a wide variety of global factors which mean it is impossible to totally guarantee not to increase the cost of meals. However parents should be reassured that we will do everything within our power to freeze the cost they pay for the three full terms.

“Freezing the price of our school meals benefits parents and guardians financially and they can be assured that the meals we provide are also supporting the health and wellbeing of their children.”

The county council also confirmed that it intended to continue sourcing produce locally where possible.
