Amidst the Son of Buskathon event this Saturday, Speakers’ Corner celebrated its second birthday with a rendition of Happy Birthday, led by MP Michael Fabricant.

People gathered to hear a few words from The Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Chair of Lichfield Speakers’ Corner Committee and Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral, and to sample some birthday cake, which was distributed by the assembled dignitaries, including the town crier, Ken Knowles; Cllr Ken Humphreys, Vice Chairman of Lichfield District Council and Cllr Christopher Spruce, City and District Councillor.

Lichfied’s Speakers’ Corner became the second Speakers’ Corner outside London when it launched two years ago, and was recently refurbished as part of the Lichfield Historic Parks Project. Now it has a stone plinth that bears a quote by Dr Samuel Johnson, ‘In order that all men may be taught to speak the truth, it is necessary that all likewise should learn to hear it’.

The Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Chair of Lichfield Speakers’ Corner Committee and Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral, said:

“We’re happy to be celebrating yet another fantastic year at Speakers’ Corner Lichfield. We’re also delighted to be carrying out this year’s birthday celebrations as part of the Son of Buskathon event, which builds on the Buskathon of 2010. I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Lichfield District Council, Lichfield City Council and the Linford Group for making the refurbishment of Speakers’ Corner possible.”
