Lichfield children are working with police to tackle problem parking outside their school.

The youngsters from Willows Primary on Anglesey Road have been learning about road safety issues such as parking on footpaths and yellow lines or blocking driveways.

And between June 6 and 17, patrols will be carried out near the school at peak times, with offending motorists given an advice postcard filled in by the children to warn them of the dangers posed by their hazardous parking.

Lichfield PCSO Maggie Griffiths said:

“As a parent, I understand some people may be in a hurry to drop their children off at school but their safety – and that of other road users – must be the highest priority. The fact that some inconsiderate parkers cause nuisance to residents living near schools makes tackling this issue even more pressing.  There is no excuse for being inconsiderate or impolite to parents, other road users and local residents.”

Hayley Sheldon, secretary of the North Lichfield Initiative who are supporting the work, added:

“As a parent of a child at Willows Primary I’m very passionate about this project which could help prevent a tragedy. I have seen a few children suffer near misses from cars in the past.”

People are urged to report inconsiderate parking to Staffordshire Police on 0300 123 44 55
