More than 1,000 titles can be borrowed, free of charge, for three weeks for use on devices like iPhones, book readers or iPads.

Staffordshire County Councillor Pat Corfield, Member for Culture, Communities and Customers, said the service would attract new members to libraries. He added:

“Staffordshire’s libraries are already at the forefront of new technology with services like Wifi, and the new e-books service will bring in people who may have not used the library service before. It gives people a new way to read, and continues the library ethos of making books available free of charge to people across Staffordshire.

“The e-books service is further demonstration of our commitment to investing in local libraries.”

E-Books for children and adults are available and can be reserved for free if they are already on loan. For more information on the new service and to download please visit www.staffordshire.gov.uk/libraries.

It’s a great service they’re providing… But it’s a shame that one of the more popular ebook readers (ie the Amazon Kindle) is not supported due to the DRM used.

I’ve used Lichfield library for many years and due to illness was recently bought a kindle. How I wish your ebook service supported the kindle.

It’s not the ebooks that are the anomalie, it’s the Kindle. The ebooks offered by libraries, and the other free ebooks on the internet, are in the industry-standard EPUB format – it is Amazon who have decided that the Kindle will use a different format to the rest of the world so that Kindle users will *have* to get their books from Amazon, as there is no other compatibility.

So, that’s it – it’s not that the libraries don’t support the Kindle, it’s that Amazon chose the Kindle to not be supported.

Libraries in America have recently started supporting the Kindle though, so hopefully UK libraries will follow suit soon.
