More than a hundred balloons have been released in a village near Lichfield to raise awareness of the impact high speed rail could have on their area.

The Stop HS2 Balloon Race began at The Royal Oak in Kings Bromley on Saturday (August 6) and will run until September 1, with the sponsor of the balloon that has travelled furthest winning a prize.

But the balloon race also had a deeper significance. A spokesperson for the event said:

“As well as the fun of the competition, the race has a serious purpose. We need to help spread the word and gain support to stop HS2 from people who are not on the route.

“Did you realise even if you are not directly affected by the route, you will still have to pay for it? If you are unaware of the details about HS2 please visit www.stophs2.org and www.wpcstophs2.wordpress.com.”
