Volunteers are being urged to take part in a conservation group’s last event of the summer.

Gentleshaw Common will play host to Lichfield District Council’s Countryside and Parks Conservation Group (CPCG) on September 7 from 10.30am to 3pm.

The event will be a chance for volunteers to roll up their sleeves to help conserve the wetland habitat, which is home to some of the rarest plants and animals in the UK.

The CPCG group will be working to expand the site’s wetlands by cutting and hand-bailing wetland grasses and creating shallow ponds, known as scrapes.

Justine Lloyd, countryside manager for Lichfield District Council, said:

“We’re hoping lots of volunteers will join us on the day to help us manage Gentleshaw Common’s rare and fragile wetland heathland.”

Ruth Witczak, Beacon Park’s community and education officer, added:

“This event will be a good way to get involved in conservation work and meet local people who share a similar interest in volunteering and wildlife. If you come along, don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes, bring some thick gardening gloves and a packed lunch.”

No skills are needed and the volunteers will be given full training, but must be over 18 years of age. There is no need to book, just meet in the car park of Ye Olde Windmill Pub, Off Commonside, at 10.30am.
