Nether Stowe School’s team – Kay Boot, Tracey Hallam, Rosalind Dunn, Carolyn Sugg and Cheryl Tomlinson, received the accolade in the Staffordshire Catering Services Awards for Excellence.

Headteacher Ruth Poppleton nominated the team because of their friendly, positive and professional approach. She wrote in the citation:

“Kay and her team are worthy nominees for this award because of their willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ to add an extra special touch to events for both staff and students.

“For the Royal Wedding the dining room was decorated with balloons and a special menu was available. Students celebrated Wimbledon with strawberries and shortbread.

“At Christmas time elderly members of our community joined us for a special lunch and recently they served breakfast to over 160 Police officers who will be deployed to Lichfield for a royal visit.”

Speaking after the award, the headteacher added: “There have been many studies which have shown that the quality of the food that students eat at lunchtime affects their capacity to learn in the afternoon.

“Our catering team have worked hard to provide tempting, tasty meals that are nutritional and meet the current food regulations for schools.

“I am thrilled for the team. This award reflects the dedication they show to their work and the school.”

Catering manager Kay Boot said: “We have worked hard to make our services attractive to young people.

“We listen to their views about the food on offer and then identify and develop new products. We have a group of students who taste all our products before they go on sale.

“We make the catering areas attractive and decorate them according to the many themed days that we run. Most importantly we welcome the students with a smile.”
