Villagers in the Mease Valley are being given the chance to act smart to keep crime out of their communities.

The SmartWater initiative gives residents the chance to invisibly mark possessions such as jewellery and expensive TVs, electrical goods and mobile phones. In the event of these being stolen and recovered, police use the unique mark left to return the goods to their rightful owner.

Councillor Sue Arnold, Lichfield District Council’s representative for the Mease & Tame ward admitted she was delighted the scheme – which will see SmartWater available for a reduced £20 price – will now be available for her constituents.

“My fellow councillors in Stonnall and Little Aston had trialled the procedure and couldn’t speak highly enough of the reduction in crime,” she explained. “But more importantly it is being proactive and creating fear in the mind of the criminal so they don’t target our villages.”

The SmartWater kits – which are deigned to mark and protect four bedroomed properties – will be on offer to Mease Valley residents, with some of the parishes able to cut the £20 price tag still further.

Cllr Arnold – who is also hoping to bring in a discounted package for the farming community in her area – added: “When the leaflet arrives at your home which will be delivered by your local parish council please think carefully and for a relatively small outlay of £20, SmartWater should give you total piece of mind in an age when we are constantly being bombarded by news of crime.”
