Mr McDonald said: “I am a firm believer in the principles of the NHS and admire the work that has been done to modernise and provide good quality services to all.

“I fully recognise the challenges that persist, especially in this difficult economic environment with political desire for change alongside the constant progression of medicine and patient expectations, and I am keen to do what I can to help.”

Mr McDonald worked for 25 years in the pub industry, including 16 years based in Burton at Allied Breweries and later Punch Taverns plc where as Group Finance Director he was part of the team that successfully floated the company on the stock exchange and grew the business to become market leader.

After leaving Punch in 2007 he briefly served on the main boards of the Woolworths Group plc and Luminar plc, both at critical times in their history.

“All businesses involved dealing with complex issues and ensuring sound relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, internal and external, and I believe these are skills which I can use to serve the Board of the Burton Hospitals,” he said.

Mr McDonald has served on a variety of company boards over the past 20 years, mainly as Finance Director, and now advises on diverse projects, including consultancy in the leisure sector and helping some start-up businesses.

Trust Chairman Jim Morrison said: “Robert’s strong record in business leadership and delivering strategic objectives provides the hospital with a wealth of experience and insight which I’m sure will be invaluable to our future success.”
