Students from a Lichfield school have been trying their hand at bell ringing.

St Chad’s Church welcomed pupils from Nether Stowe School to give them the chance to try out the traditional musical skill.

Miss Wooding, the school’s Head of RE, who organised the activity said: “ St Chad’s is very close to the school and so we were really pleased to be able to work with the bell ringers from the church.

“The students have returned to school full of enthusiasm, having had a wonderful time. I hope that some of them will continue to take part long after the project has ended.

“Bell ringing has an important role to play in our national heritage.”

Very interested to read this. I taught Mathematics at Nether Stowe for 2 years from September 1981 to July 1983 and started a band of children ringing. This was helped by having both Wendy (now Bloom) and Martin Smith on the school roll at the time. We taught several children from scratch in the lunch hour at St Chads, and had a practice up at St Michaels one evening in the week. We hired a minibus and went on tour for the school’s summer project, where I was greatly assisted by my future husband David Sworder and his friends from Manchester University Guild.

The Nether Stowe Band rang several quarters – the first was Plain Bob Doubles on 10th March 1982. All Saints, Kings Bromley 1. David Spilsbury (1st) 2. Claire Keeling, 3. Christine Provost (me) 4. Wendy Smith (C) 5. Martin Smith
Other 1st quarters included Susan Sagar on 14th July 1982, Michael Mckenzie, and Jane Woolcock on 29th June 1983, which was also my first as conductor. Other names that helped included Andrew Share and Ian White

Unfortunately I left the school and area when I married in August 1983, and the band had no adult to supervise. I’m back in touch with Wendy, but have lost touch with all the others.

So it was very nice to see that it is being started again. Good luck!
