Lichfield City’s second string continued their fine form with arguably their best performance of the season against high-flying Bromsgrove.
The victory preserved their unbeaten start to the season and kept them top of the table.
It was Sporting who started the brightest, a long ball over the top of a static City back four resulted in Matty Gough putting the ball into his own net under pressure from Cameron Wellington.
This gave City the wake up call they needed, Josh Bambury firing wide after good work from Leon Morgan.
Lichfield didn’t have to wait long for an equaliser as an inswinging corner from Dexter Ravenhill was headed against the bar by Danny Reeves, before being bundled over the line by Bambury from the resulting scramble on 15 minutes.
City now poured forward in droves and a through ball by Ravenhill sent Morgan racing clear to finish emphatically.
Lichfield continued to dominate proceedings and were rewarded with a third five minutes before the break when Bambury’s low drive from the edge of the box found the bottom corner to put his side 3-1 up at the break.
The second half started as the first ended with the hosts dominating the play and they soon found themselves with a fourth goal, an error by sporting keeper Chris Mole presented Ashley Bennett with a simple task of finding an empty net for his 15th goal of the season.
Lichfield remained on top with the outstanding Leon Morgan causing all sorts of problems for the Sporting defence, but it was Bromsgrove who had the final say of the game when a harmless free kick was diverted into the net by City defender Danny Reeves for a second own goal of the game.
But despite the late goal, City held on for all three points and now sit four points clear of nearest rivals Coleshill Town at the top of the table.
