Soloists set for Lichfield Cathedral performance

Two internationally-renowned soloists are set to perform at Lichfield Cathedral.

The Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra (DECO) will be welcoming husband and wife team George Caird and Jane Salmond for the Winter Warmers concert on February 11.

This musical treat opens with Samuel Barber’s ever-popular Adagio for Strings – a regular in the Classic FM Hall of Fame, before oboist George, who wowed DECO’s audience in Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto last year, will then take centre stage in Barber’s Canzonetta.

Jane, cellist in the award-winning Schubert Ensemble, will indulge audiences in the beautiful romance of Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile, before the couple showcase a true musical marriage in Kenneth Leighton’s Veris Gratia.

George said: “Jane and I are really pleased to have the chance to play Kenneth Leighton’s Veris Gratia. It is a beautiful English pastoral work with lyrical writing for oboe, cello and the whole string orchestra and it will be nicely contrasted with the oboe writing by Barber and Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile for cello.

“Where better to play these works than Lichfield Cathedral!”

Conductor Philip Scriven and DECO’s string players will send the audience away with a spring in their step, finishing the concert on a spirited high with Grieg’s dance-inspired Holberg Suite.

The Winter Warmers concert is at 7.30pm on February 11. Tickets in the nave are £15 adults, £12 concessions, £5 child, while unreserved obstructed view seats are also available for a reduced price.
