Match report: Aldridge RUFC 2nds 12 Burntwood RUFC 3rds 31

Burntwood RUFC’s 3rd team game came to an early conclusion after a serious injury.

With the the visitors leading 31-12 early in the second half, Nigel Smith took a knock to the head which led to him being taken to hospital and the game being abandoned.

He has since been discharged from hospital but is likely to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The visitors had taken an early lead from the very first passage of play which resulted in John Pucci scoring out wide, this was soon followed by a score under the posts from a 40 metre solo run by Rob England. Mitch Carless converted the latter.

Burntwood then seemed to take their foot off the gas as some ill discipline by their forwards allowed Aldridge to take a short tap penalty and crash over.

The visiting team then restored their two try advantage as Lewis Aston crossed the Aldridge line for his first try of the afternoon, again converted by Carless. However once more, Burntwood allowed their hosts back into the contest by giving away another penalty which again the big pack forced over the line.

Then just before the half time interval, England – playing in an unfamiliar position on the flank – went under the posts for his second try of the afternoon. Carless easily converted.

Early in the second half Aston grabbed his second try of the game before the abandonment of the fixture as a result of Smith’s injury.
