Lichfield golfer Robert Rock urges people to get involved in Midlands Golf Week events

A Lichfield golfer is urging potential players to try out the sport.

Robert Rock, who held off the challenge of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to win the Abu Dhabi Championship, is supporting the game at grass roots level through his academy, based at Darnford Moors Golf Club.

And the 34-year-old is lending his support to the Midlands Golf Week, which runs from April 9 to 15.

“Golf is a great sport to be enjoyed at all levels and by players of different ages and abilities,” he said. “I will never forget the thrill of winning, especially against such a strong field of players and with Tiger Woods breathing down my neck.

“But there is just as much pleasure to be taken from the sport at your local club, whether it be knocking shots off your handicap, winning one of the competitions or enjoying the social side of a sport that is great for making new friends and enjoying a more healthy lifestyle.

“At my own Academy we seek to encourage people to learn the skills needed to play the game in a fun and sociable environment and this is being replicated across the Midlands. Now is the perfect time to give golf a go yourself and find out how much fun it can be.”

The 2012 Midlands Golf Week features free taster sessions and coaching programmes along with discounted rounds of golf and club memberships.

As part of the event, Darnford Moors Golf Club will host a range of sessions, including:

  • April 10: Ladies Get into Golf morning. Free group coaching (10am-12noon)
  • April 11: Free coaching/tips for adults with every large range basket bought (7pm-9pm)
  • April 12: Free coaching for over 60s. Free range balls and coaching when you register. (10am-12noon)
  • April 15: Open day at Academy course. No green fee on short course all day. Registration essential.
