A Lichfield man has pleaded guilty to five charges relating to benefits fraud.

On 27 March 2012 at Burton Magistrates’ Court, 46-year-old Martyn Ward, of Dimbles Lane in Lichfield, admitted five charges of making a false declaration in connection with his claims to council tax benefit and job seekers’ allowance.

The court heard that over a period of four years, Mr Ward failed to declare that he held savings and investments greater than the £16,000 capital limit.

As a result of his actions, Mr Ward was overpaid £3,273 in council tax benefit and £1,703 in job seekers’ allowance.

He was fined £275, ordered to pay £850 costs, and a £15 victim surcharge within 28 days.

Mr Ward has repaid the money fraudulently obtained.

Councillor Mike Wilcox, Leader of Lichfield District Council and Cabinet Member for Finance, Revenues and Benefits, said: “When making a claim, it is really important to declare any savings you might have, as this can affect your entitlement to housing or council tax benefit.

“If you are worried about your claim, please contact our benefits team as soon as possible, so they can help to make sure you are getting the right amount.”
