Chasetown FC have confirmed their backroom team will take charge for the make-or-break relegation clash with Burscough following the departure of Chris Brindley.

The former Stafford Rangers chief received his marching orders earlier this week after a season of struggle in the wake of Charlie Blakemore’s decision to step down earlier this season.

The club had remained tight-lipped about the decision until finally making a brief announcement on their website late yesterday (April 19).

A spokesperson wrote: “The club’s officials would like to extend their thanks to Chris for his efforts over the course of this season and wish him the best for the future, and it has been decided that Chasetown’s other coaching staff will take charge of the side for this Saturday’s all-important survival game at Burscough.”

Meanwhile, the battle for survival has got even tougher for the Scholars after Whitby Town earned a 4-2 win against Matlock Town, meaning they are now four points ahead and out of reach for Chasetown.

The result means that the Scholars must win against Burscough and hope Stocksbridge Park Steels lose at home to 14th placed Kendal Town.

Chasetown currently occupy 19th – the last of the four relegation spots – and even a finish there could be enough if Northwich Victoria lose an appeal against their expulsion from the league at the end of the season.

But that means eyes will also be on Frickley Athletic, who sit a point below Chasetown and face Stafford Rangers on the final day.

And Rangers manager Greg Clowes has reassured his Staffordshire rivals that his players will be doing all they can to help them out.

““I would love for Chasetown to stay up, I want local teams in our league as I think it’s healthy for the area,” he told the Express & Star.

As it stands:

Pos Team Played Points GD
17 Whitby Town 41 44 -24
18 Stocksbridge Park Steels 41 42 -16
19 Chasetown 41 40 -25
20 Frickley Athletic 41 39 -22
21 Mickleover Sports 41 37 -21
22 Burscough 41 24 -50
