The panel are set to begin their visits and deliberations in May after 57 villages entered the competition for 2012. A second round of judging will take place in June.

John Perry, MBE, Chairman of the Best Kept Village Working Group, which organises the contest on behalf of the Community Council of Staffordshire, said: “While many villages try to keep their areas maintained to as high a standard as possible throughout the year, you will probably see plenty of extra activity over the next few months.

“There will be regular litter picking teams keeping on top of potential ‘problems’, the groups who maintain churchyards and war memorials will be hard at work and the Best Kept Village organising committees will be trying to ensure that open spaces and verges are cut regularly and noticeboards are kept neat and tidy – it’s a busy time all round!

“I am very pleased that we have such a good number of entries this year. Some villages have clearly felt that they wanted to make a special effort in 2012.”
